Why Square or Round Dance?

Simply because it is fun and leads to ...

  • healthy exercise
A number of recent medical studies have identified dancing as a great way to keep the mind sharp and the body in a fit and healthy state, thus delaying the effects of the aging process, regardless of your current age. Our dance halls are also an alcohol & smoke-free environment at all times.
  • new friendships
You'll meet literally hundreds of new friends, both near & far. After the obvious health benefits of the exercise, this is huge social benefit as we've seen that most dancers become friends for life! In essence, you'll inherit a huge extended family!
  • potential for travel (near and far)
You can visit other dance clubs while at home (near) or when travelling anywhere (far), especially if you're a 'snowbird'. Square dancing is called in English throughout the world, so no matter where you go, you'll be able to dance! Here in Canada, we have a national convention every 2 years that allows you to travel to other parts of Canada.
The focal point of square and round dancing is to have fun learning and practicing the dances and enjoying the new friends you're meeting. Each fall, many of the clubs in our region host Open Houses whereby you'll get the chance to give it a try while enjoying the fun of the dance, as well as meeting a whole bunch of new friends!

What is Modern Square Dancing

What is Round Dancing

In Modern Square Dancing there are no set patterns for a dance. The dancers learn a number of moves which the caller then puts together to form the dance. The caller calls out these moves to the dancers and the dancers follow the calls". The dancers do not know which moves will be called next. Usually all dancers move together, although some calls are executed by just four people.

Round dancing is best described as choreographed ballroom dancing for couples. It is a social non-competitive activity. On the dance floor, choreography is directed verbally by a round dance cuer, enabling all couples on the floor to dance the same steps at the same time. Round dance has many choreographed sequences of steps that are borrowed from or can be transferred directly to normal ballroom dancing.
